Update the location of an encounter
This flow shows how to record where the patient is inside the facility. The end state is an encounter with a current location, and a location history that shows every move.

Before you start
- You need a role with update encounter permission. Admin, Doctor, Nurse, and Facility Admin hold this permission.
- The encounter is open.
- The facility has locations and beds set up.
Steps
1. Open the encounter
In the facility menu, select Patients. Open the list for the encounter type you want. Open the encounter from the list.
2. Open the location panel
In the Actions panel, select Update Location.
The location panel opens on the Assign Location tab. Select Location History to see the earlier locations of the patient.
3. Select a bed
Move through the locations of the facility. Select the bed you want.
If the bed holds another patient, Care shows a warning. If the patient in the bed is discharged, confirm to continue. If the encounter in the bed is still active, select another bed.
4. Confirm the assignment

| Assign Bed Now | The patient occupies the bed now. |
| Schedule for later | The patient occupies the bed at a later time. |
| Add Reserved Bed | You hold the bed for the patient. |
Care records the new location and adds the earlier location to the history.
After you update the location
| Next step | When |
|---|---|
| Record clinical data | The patient is in the bed and care continues. |
| Update Location again | The patient moves to another bed or ward. |
| Mark as Completed | The episode ends. See Close an encounter. |
